    See Staged Reading of ‘Perseverance of the Saints’ by Adjunct Professor in Department of Humanities

    Two readings of the the play Perseverance of the Saints by Kat Evans, adjunct professor of playwriting for the Department of the Humanities, will be held for free at the First United Methodist Church Sanctuary at Chicago Temple, 77 W. Washington St. The readings of the play about a tumultuous religious conflict in the years after the Great Chicago Fire will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 5, and at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7.

    Social Sciences Professor Spending Sabbatical in South Africa and India

    With the support of a small grant from the Illinois Tech Department of Humanities, Patrick Ireland, Professor of Political Science, completed the field research this past March for a project begun during his last sabbatical in AY 2014-2015 that compares the presence and effects of West African migrants in urban spaces in Dakar, Tangier, and Barcelona: how urban development policies shape their lives and livelihoods and, in turn, how they challenge and alter the sociopolitical context, raising questions about rights, membership, and lived diversity. Since July, he has been a Fellow at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study in South Africa, writing up the study results.

    Humanities, Social Sciences, and Psychology Departments Offering Intensive 14-Day Winter Courses

    Winter term courses will be offered by the Humanities Department, Social Sciences Department, and the Psychology Department. There are two sessions, an early session from December 10–23, and a later session, from December 26–January 8. These courses are designed to cover all of the same material covered in a one-semester course but in 14 days—10 days of instruction and four reading days.

    The Humanities Department is excited to be offering COM 545: Academic Writing in Spring 2024! This course familiarizes graduate students with both reading and writing academic texts across disciplines. Students will practice reading, analyzing, and developing written and spoken academic genres (e.g., reviews, articles, conference papers and talks, CVs, cover letters).

    The Department of Humanities is accepting submissions for its 58th annual writing contest. All full-time Illinois Tech undergraduate students (students who are currently taking at least 12 credit hours) are invited to submit original pieces of fiction, poetry, plays, nonfiction, and philosophical analysis.
