OVERVIEW
Opportunity for early career researchers within three years of receiving their Ph.D. to conduct independent research aligned with Argonne and DOE missions. Fellows work with an Argonne sponsor to conduct independent research, while integrating into established programs. Fellows are hired as an Argonne Scholar with full benefits, a highly competitive salary and a stipend for research support. Fellows may renew their appointments on an annual basis for up to three (3) years, with the possibility of retention.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications are accepted from July–October each year and must include:

• Research Proposal aligning to specified initiatives (see website for details)
• Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
• Academic CV
• Graduate trasncrips

Finalists will be paired with an Argonne sponsor and invited to a virtual interview with the selection committee. Sponsors will meet with the committee to discuss support for their candidates. All application materials must be submitted by 7:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time (U.S.) on October 1, 2022. Incomplete applications will not be considered for review. Decisions are expected in January.

MARIA GOEPPERT MAYER
Maria Goeppert Mayer was a theoretical physicist and received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963 for proposing and developing a mathematical model for the nuclear shell of the atomic nucleus — work she conducted while here at Argonne as a senior physicist. For this work she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963, shared with J. Hans D. Jensen and Eugene Paul Wigner. That it bears the name of Goeppert Mayer underscores the prestige of this fellowship.
