Great Problems, Great Minds Seminar Series: ‘Uncertainty in Spatial Analysis: Visualization, Measurement, and Modeling,’ Featuring Yongwan Chun

Join the Social Sciences Colloquium at the Department of Social Sciences for this Great Problems, Great Minds seminar series event featuring guest speaker Yongwan Chun, a professor and the program head of the Geospatial Information Sciences program at the University of Texas at Dallas, who will give a presentation on “Uncertainty in Spatial Analysis: Visualization, Measurement, and Modeling.” This seminar will take place on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 3:15–4:30 p.m. over Zoom.

Abstract

Uncertainty in spatial analysis has been recognized in literature. Research has addressed various aspects of uncertainty including different sources of error, visualization of uncertainty, and error propagations. While positional error is inevitably raised in data representations (e.g., in GIS), attribute error also has an impact on spatial analysis. The release of margins of error in the American Community Survey draws an attention to attribute errors in spatial analysis. Focusing on attribute error, this presentation discusses uncertainty-related research areas in spatial analysis and shows recent progresses specifically in visualization, measurement, and modeling of uncertainty.

Bio

Yongwan Chun’s research interests are in geographic information science and spatial statistics methodologically and lie in urban geographical issues as substantive research areas. Specific research topics include quantitative methods, especially using spatial statistical approaches for geographical research, geographic data uncertainty, population migration, urban crime, and public health. He has published 65 peer-reviewed journal articles in top journals, such as the International Journal of Geographical Information Science, Geographical Analysis, and Annals of the Association of American Geographers. He has also published 15 book chapters and four co-authored books. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, Cubes Inc., and Sundosoft Inc. Chun received his Ph.D. in Geography and M.A.S in Statistics from the Ohio State University, and his master’s and bachelor’s in geography education from Seoul National University.
