2013 CSL Undergraduate Summer Research Stipend Program Nomination Deadline Approaching

IIT College of Science and Letters Associate Dean Matt Bauer announced that the college is accepting nominations for $5,000 CSL Undergraduate Summer Research Stipends for summer 2013. Up to eight stipends will be awarded. All CSL majors are eligible, and all IIT faculty may nominate a student. Nominations are due by Monday, April 15.

In addition, Bauer said CSL faculty will again give Undergraduate Research Orientation lectures in late May and June for undergraduate students (and new graduate students). Proposed topics include Welcome To Research, Library Resources, Ethics, Statistical Software (JMP), MATLAB, and LaTeX editor for scholarly paper creation. More information about the lectures will be available in May; email bauerm@iit.edu.

Now in their seventh year, the CSL Undergraduate Summer Research Stipends help students expand their hands-on research experience, explore their interests, solve problems, advance knowledge, and prepare for the next step — whether graduate school, medical school, or the workplace. They are funded primarily by the college’s board of overseers and alumni.

To be eligible, a student should be a full-time undergraduate (typically a sophomore or junior) in good standing, with a grade point average of 3.0 or above. He or she also should not be a recipient of another, similar stipend.

Past winners have done work in humanities, political science, computer science, applied mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics. Read about the work of last year’s winners here.
