Congratulations to the 2013 RISE and RISE Pro recipients at IIT!
RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. RISE offers unique opportunities for bachelor-level students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of two–three months during the summer.
Our undergraduate RISE recipients include:
- Tymoteusz Maculewicz, an aerospace engineer going to Technische Universität Berlin to for his project in “Parametric Investigation of Combustion Noise in an Anechoic Chamber”
- Whitney Theisen, a student in architectural engineering and engineering management, going to Bauhaus-Universitat Wiemar for evaluation of models in structural engineering
- Abhiroop Chattopadhyay, an electrical engineer going to Karlsruhe Institute of Technology for the project “Laser Doppler Wind Profiler for the Active Control of Wind Turbines”
- Nour Daoud, an electrical engineer going to the University of Offenburg to research automated modulation classification
In addition, two computer science major recipients prefer to remain anonymous.
The RISE Pro program is for graduating seniors and graduate students to gain experience in German companies. Our RISE Pro recipient is Juan Sebastien Hurtado Jarmillo, a master’s student in electrical engineering. He will be working at Nuance Communications, gaining experience in speech communications technology.
This year, more than 2,000 students applied to RISE and only 300 students were awarded paid internships, meaning RISE had less than a 15 percent acceptance rate. At IIT, we boast a 37.5 percent acceptance rate, as six of our 16 students to complete the full application were awarded a RISE internship and stipend.
The International Center would like to thank all academic departments, advisors and professors who wrote letters and mentored students in the application process, as well as the Career Management Center for assistance in reading cover letters and resumes. We also appreciate the assistance of IIT College of Science and Letters Dean Russell Betts in helping to ensure the placement of some of our students.
