The Black Student Union (BSU) at Illinois Institute of Technology is proud to host a Political Education session focusing on the theme “Rehabilitation vs. Debilitation” within the criminal justice system. This event on Monday, October 28, will explore the tension between punitive approaches and rehabilitative alternatives, examining how incarceration often results in long-term harm for individuals and communities, particularly Black and Brown populations.

In collaboration with Chicago Torture Justice Center, this session aims to provide insight into community-driven solutions that emphasize healing, restoration, and transformation as alternatives to punishment.

Key Objectives
  • Explore the contrast between rehabilitation and debilitation, focusing on how rehabilitation can empower individuals and communities, while debilitation further entrenches harm.
  • Focus on solutions, offering actionable insights into how we can shift from punitive systems to restorative practices that address the root causes of harm and promote healing.
  • Equip students, staff, faculty and community members with the knowledge and resources to challenge the carceral system and advocate for justice and reform within their communities.
