Indiana Church Designed by Illinois Tech Alumnus Makes National Registry

A church with a pleated roof evocative of hands in prayer.A church designed by Wendell Campbell, a prominent mid-20th century African American architect who studied under Mies van der Rohe at Illinois Institute of Technology, has recently been listed to the National Register of Historic Places. The congregation of St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church in Campbell’s native East Chicago first organized in 1916, constructed its first building in 1917, and contacted Campbell to design a new house of worship in 1973. The unique design, an example of neo-expressionist religious architecture, is likened to hands folded in prayer with a multi-folded plate roof.
