About Hassan’s Career at IIT
Dr. Zia Hassan dedicated his entire career to Illinois Institute of Technology, starting in the late 1950s when he came to IIT to pursue his Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and later earned his Ph.D. His academic roles included serving as Instructor, Assistant, and then Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering; Department Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Management Science; and Professor of Management Science, Associate Dean, and Dean of IIT Stuart School of Business.
During his tenure as Dean, he managed a faculty and staff of 40 people and a budget of $8 million. He oversaw the launch of IIT Stuart’s distinctive Master of Science programs in Finance, Financial Markets & Trading, Environmental Management, and Marketing Communication. Hassan succeeded in earning AACSB accreditation for IIT Stuart School of Business in 1999, a distinction earned by less than 5% of the world’s business schools that recognizes the highest caliber of business education.
In 2002, Hassan stepped down as Dean and became Director of IIT Stuart’s Ph.D. program. Throughout his 50+ years at IIT, Hassan has supervised 16 dissertations and mentored countless students in their academic, research, and professional endeavors.
Hassan has served as a graduate school representative to the IIT Alumni Association, was named to the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, and received the IIT Alumni Medal in 2008, the highest honor bestowed by the IIT Alumni Association.
In addition to his academic service, Hassan helped establish the Islamic Foundation in Villa Park, Ill., in 1974 and has served as chair of the Board for the past 40 years.
