The Student Health and Wellness Center is open from 1:30-2:30 pm Monday-Thursdays for IIT students to receive a mumps vaccination.

There are nine documented and confirmed cases of mumps that have been reported at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since spring break. Overall, there have been 65 cases of mumps cases in Illinois this year, which is up from 26 in 2013.

Mumps is an acute vaccine-preventable viral illness transmitted by respiratory droplets and saliva. It is spread through close contact by droplets (coughing, talking, and sneezing). Some people who get mumps have very mild or no symptoms, and therefore do not know they were infected with mumps. It causes swelling of the glands in front of the ears and above the jaw. These glands are called “parotid” glands.

In most people, the early symptoms include: fever, feeling tired and achy, headache, and having a poor appetite. Usually two days after the early symptoms start, the parotid glands become swollen.

For those who have not had the mumps or received the MMR vaccine, it is easy to catch mumps by being around someone who is infected. After you catch the infection, symptoms start in about 14-18 days.
