Join the IIT Institute of Design for In the Loop with Mél Hogan: The Archive as Dumpster on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 from 12:30-2 p.m. at ID, located at 350 North Lasalle Street, Chicago. In four exploratory theoretical gestures – appraise, dispose, hoard, and mediate, Hogan proposes the “archive as dumpster” as a framework for returning to the physical conditions of memory, where “picking through the trash” subverts traditional archival methodologies by insisting on the very material consequences of a culture inculcated in networked digital communications. Hogan makes the argument that by posing the archive as a mediatic question, we can begin to account more seriously for the ways in which the perceived immateriality and weightlessness of our data have important humanistic, environmental, political, and ethical repercussions.
