Ankit Srivastava, assistant professor of mechanical, materials, and aerospace engineering at Armour College of Engineering, authored an article published in the November 2016 issue of the top journal in the area of mechanics and solids, the Journal of Mechanics and Physics of Solids.
The manuscript titled, “Metamaterial Properties of Periodic Laminates” details the metamaterial wave phenomena exhibited by 1-D phonic crystals that have been traditionally associated with 2- and 3-D crystals. The proposed materials will find use in super-resolution imaging devices, such as near field microscopes, enabling scientist to image nanoscale details that would have previously been impossible to capture. Furthermore, these materials are high pass filters, making them naturally suited as thin and lightweight barriers for isolating low frequency sounds.
