Women’s Lacrosse Triumphs in First Home Game of the Season

The Illinois Tech Women’s Lacrosse team played its first home game of the season at Stuart Field against Hamline University on March 18. The Hawks captured the 12-11 Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference win and kept their perfect record.

How It Happened

  • Illinois Tech started the game off strong, as Isabella Rubin scored two goals less three minutes in. The Hawks extended the advantage even more, leading 5-2 with 13:29 left in the first half.
  • The Pipers were able to cut the lead down to two, but sophomore Alyssa DeLuca added two goals before halftime to give the Hawks a 7-3 lead heading into the break.
  • Hamline pounced on the Hawks early in the second half, scoring three goals in seven minutes to cut the lead down to one (7-6). Less than a minute later, Rubin once again stormed down the field and was able to get one back for the Hawks (8-6).
  • The Pipers kept the pressure on, scoring three goals in two minutes to get their first lead of the game at 9-8.
  • With 11:27 left in the game and the Pipers leading 10-9, sophomore Madison Meredith found DeLuca open in front of the goal where she calmly finished the ball in the corner to tie the game at 10. The two would repeat the connection with just over a minute to go to give the Hawks the lead once again.
  • After the Pipers tied things back up, an unassisted goal by Meredith with 4:59 left while the Hawks were up a player proved to be the game-winner, as the Hawks left Stuart Field with the 12-11 win.

Scarlet Hawks Standouts

  • Rubin had another phenomenal game, scoring six goals on seven shots (one shorthanded), having six draw controls, one caused turnover, and picking up three ground balls.
  • DeLuca also had a great game scoring five goals on six shots while causing five turnovers.
  • Meredith tallied three assists, caused a team-high six turnovers, picked up three ground balls, and scored the game-winning goal.

Stats to Know

  • Illinois Tech tallied 27 shots, two more than Hamline (25).
  • Both teams converted on four of seven free position shots.
  • The Pipers had two more draw controls than the Hawks (13-11)
  • Turnovers (Illinois Tech 22, Hamline 20), fouls (Illinois Tech 32, Hamline 30), and ground balls (Hamline 23, Illinois Tech 22) were all near-even.
