ComEd has partnered with Illinois Institute of Technology on two United States Department of Energy grants to develop and test microgrid technology on Illinois Tech’s Mies Campus and in Bronzeville. A microgrid is a small electrical grid that is able to disconnect from the main grid to secure distribution during extreme weather events and during cyber or physical attacks. ComEd and Illinois Tech will work to connect a planned microgrid in the Bronzeville neighborhood to the existing Illinois Tech microgrid, creating one of the first microgrid clusters in the world. This partnership will give researchers a better understanding of how to leverage microgid technology in emergency situations.
