The Student Health and Wellness Center and the Office of Campus Life are collaborating on a Denim Day event scheduled for Wednesday, April 25.
What is Denim Day?
The Denim Day campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.
How can you help?
We are asking for old jeans donations to utilize for a display. Students will be able to decorate the jeans with empowering message or stats about sexual violence. This will hopefully be out for the two weeks prior to Denim Day. If your supervisor approves, we ask you to wear jeans on Denim Day (April 25).
There will be boxes in the McCormick Tribune Campus Center (MTCC) and IIT Tower to collect jeans donations. Contact campus.life@iit.edu if you need help locating the donation boxes.
