Due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released a new version of the federal Form W-4 (Employee Withholding Certificate) for 2020.
The new Form W-4 and related instructions can be found on the IIT Portal under: Work tab/Administrative Offices/Payroll/Forms/Federal W-4.
Illinois Institute of Technology is not able to provide individual guidance on the completion of the new W-4 or any related tax implications.
If you were hired before January 1, 2020, the IRS does not require that you submit a new form. Your withholding will continue based on your previously submitted W-4.
However, if you wish to change your withholding after January 1, 2020, you will need to use the new form to do so.
Please note that:-
• Employees hired on or after January 1, 2020, are required to use the new form.
• If you are a current employee with a valid W-4 already on file, your withholding will continue based on your previously-submitted form.
• If you are a new employee and you do not submit a valid Form W-4, taxes will be withheld as if you are a single filer with no adjustments (per IRS regulations).
Even though the IRS does not require all employees to complete the revised form and even if your tax situation has not changed, you can perform a “paycheck checkup” to see if you need to make adjustments to your current withholding. To conduct the checkup, you can use the IRS’s Tax Withholding Estimator found at www.irs.gov/W4App.
The provider of Illinois Institute of Technology’s human resources and payroll system, Ellucian is working on a software update that will allow you to change your W-4 information electronically. Once installed, electronic changes can be made to your data by logging into the IIT Portal under: Banner Self Service/Employee/Tax Forms/W4 Tax Exemptions or Allowances/Update.
Hard copies of the new 2020 Form W-4 can be picked up in the Payroll Office.
