Many students lament that there are not any opportunities to do research or study abroad in the summer, but there are actually quite a few opportunities. Any students who have questions are free to contact studyabroad@iit.edu for more info. We will hold another information session in the spring.
RISE
RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. It offers unique opportunities for undergraduate students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 2 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language will be English. All scholarship holders receive stipends from the DAAD to help cover living expenses, while partner universities and research institutes provide housing assistance.
The official application will not open until December 6, 2012. Applications are made only through the RISE website; the deadline is January 31, 2013.

NANO Japan
The NanoJapan IREU program is geared towards the needs of young undergraduates who are new to scientific research and study of Japanese language and culture. If you have prior research experience or knowledge of Japan please share this information in your essays but it is more important for you to express a well-defined interest in both the research and cultural aspects of our program.
To be eligible to apply for one of the 12 spots on the NanoJapan International Research Experience for Undergraduates (IREU) program you must be currently in the spring semester of your freshman or sophomore year; in good academic standing and not currently under any academic suspension or other disciplinary action at your home university.
Strong preference will be given to electrical engineering or physics majors though students from other fields may be considered if they can express a demonstrated interest in physics-related research in THz dynamics in nanostructures. We strongly encourage all potential applicants to review the NanoJapan Research Host Lab websites found on the NanoJapan IREU page of our website to learn more about the type of research conducted by our host laboratories.
Up to twelve students from universities nationwide will be selected to participate in the NanoJapan program. In lieu of a program fee participants will be required to enroll in them Rice University Summer School for College Students for at least 1 or up to 2 academic research credits and pay applicable tuition and application fees.

CeNIDE Nano
The CeNIDE Nano Summer Program is a seven-week international academic program focusing on the exciting and emerging field of nanotechnology. It is designed for outstanding students from all over the world in their third to fifth academic year with a major in science or engineering. The program is taught entirely in English.
A breakdown of the internship will involve instruction in language and culture, lectures on nanotechnology, research projects, and industry visits.

GEA Aerospace Program
This course is intended for undergraduate students primarily for the GEA partner universities. It will provide the students with an overall knowledge of aeronautics and space fundamentals, as viewed from a European point of view.
The contents include scientific and technical courses , but also general conferences and visits to aeronautical and historical sites. The program is tailored for undergraduate students in Aviation/Aerospace, Juniors or Seniors who have a solid background knowledge in aeronautics and/or space sciences. A good background in general sciences is expected. Graduate students can also take part in the course on a case-by-case basis.
The program extends over 6 weeks, from May 31 to July 12, 2013. 4 weeks will be spent in Toulouse at ENAC, ENSICA and SUPAERO and 1 full week of courses takes place in Poitiers.
Two 4-day field trips to Paris and Biarritz are planned.
