The Illinois Tech Baseball team traveled north for its first of two doubleheaders in Wisconsin on April 14. The Scarlet Hawks had a great day, downing the Marian University Sabres 3-1 and 5-3.

How it Happened – Game One

• In his first start since his no-hitter, Kyle Bumpass was on cruise control for most of the afternoon. Marian didn’t get its first hit until a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
• The Scarlet Hawks offense scuffled out of the gate as well, but Illinois Tech was first to get on the board. In the top of the sixth, Orlando Cardenas-Juan drove in a run on a groundout. Two batters later, a two-out single from DJ Rybski plated another run to give Illinois Tech a 2-0 lead.
• Marian would finally get to Bumpass in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a run on two hits to cut the lead to 2-1.
• In the top of the ninth, after Ted Howell walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Bumpass singled up the middle to plate Howell with two outs, adding an insurance run.
• Bumpass came out for the ninth inning and fired a scoreless frame for his second straight complete game.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts – Game One

• Bumpass did it all on this day, going all nine innings for his third winning of the season, allowing just four hits and one run. He was also one-for-three at the plate with a run and an RBI.
• Christian Lopez was two-for-four with a stolen base and scored a run.
• Rybski and Cardenas-Juan also drove in runs. Cardenas-Juan was two-for-four in the game.

Stats to Know – Game One

• Bumpass threw 75 of his 121 pitches for strikes.
• Marian struck out 12 hitters compared to just four for Illinois Tech.
• No extra-base hits were recorded for either team.

How it Happened – Game Two

• The Scarlet Hawks were the aggressors, as a two-out single from Howell scored Rybski in the top of the first (who led off the game with a single of his own).
• After Illinois Tech starter Ryan Cantlin escaped a bases-loaded jam with a double play in the bottom of the first, Rybski added to the lead in the top of the second. With two outs, he singled to left field, driving in Bumpass and Cardenas-Juan to take a 3-0 lead.
• Marian would have its best inning of the afternoon in the second, scoring three times on just one hit. Two Illinois Tech errors aided the Sabres in tying the score at 3-3.
• The Scarlet Hawks would get two runs back in the top of the first. After a leadoff walk for Lopez and a single for Bumpass forced Marian to change pitchers, Cardenas-Juan welcomed the new arm with an RBI single. After a Matt Witkowski sacrifice bunt, Tyler Tucker then singled in another run to give the Scarlet Hawks a 5-3 lead.
• Cantlin found his groove for the Scarlet Hawks until the Sabres recorded two hits in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Dylan Corsi entered the game and struck out the first hitter he faced.
• Corsi worked out a jam in the eighth inning before allowing just a leadoff walk in the ninth, recording his first collegiate save.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts – Game Two

• Cantlin earned his second win of the season, tossing 6.2 innings while allowing three runs (one earned) on nine hits and only two walks.
• Corsi earned the save with 2.1 scoreless frames, striking out two.
• Rybski set the table at the top of the order, going three-for-five with two RBI and a run scored.
• Bumpass, who started the game in right field, had another three-hit game (three-for-four) with a run.
• Cardenas-Juan had another two-hit game (two-for-four) with a double and a stolen base.

Stats to Know – Game Two

• Marian outhit the Scarlet Hawks 12-11 despite the defeat.
• Both teams struck out three times.
• Just one extra-base hit was recorded for both teams (one double each).
