The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) will be hosting a tour of the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Campus as part of the BCO Conference technical tour program, focused on both tall buildings and the legacy of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The tour will commence on the Illinois Tech campus on Thursday, May 21 from 1:45-4:15 p.m. and Friday, May 22 from 2:15-4:45 p.m.. A short presentation on Mies’ office buildings will be provided by Dirk Lohan, principal, Lohan Anderson Architects, and grandson of Mies. Conference delegates will be introduced to Mies’ work and his impact on the Chicago skyline. A walking tour of the IIT buildings on site will conclude at McCormick Tribune Campus Center (MTCC), the student center completed by OMA in 2003. Following the tour, CTBUH Executive Director and IIT Professor Antony Wood will discuss Chicago as the continuing home of the tall building and how knowledge and expertise has crossed the Atlantic to Europe and beyond into Asia. Recent developments in the design and construction of supertall buildings will also be covered.
