IIT students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to attend a fundraising gala for Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA) IIT Student Chapter from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2014 in the Hermann Hall Ballroom. The event will feature a dinner, live entertainment, silent auctions, a special program and much more. Proceeds will be used by EWB-USA IIT for the San Claudio Program in Nicaragua.
Since November 2012, the student chapter at IIT has been working on a bridge project for the small rural community in Nicaragua. During the rainy season, the main road used by the community experiences severe flooding. This cuts off access to schools for children, marketplaces, and medical facilities, directly affecting nearly 3,000 community members. The construction of a vehicular bridge is a practical solution for this community, allowing children to safely cross a river and enabling them to go to school. The bridge project will also provide easy access to local markets where members of the community sell artisanal crafts to provide income for their families.
