Faculty and staff are invited to join an Illumination Session featuring Sarah Helm from Discover Financial Services on Friday, October 30, 2015, from 1-2:30 p.m. in the Stuart Building, Room 111.
Improving the Future for Students with Disabilities
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month and November is National Career Development Month. One of the ways in which Illinois Tech is paying tribute to both of these awareness months is by addressing the dramatic changes that are taking place in the employment landscape for people with disabilities, thanks to new federal regulations. You are invited to participate in a session where Sarah Helm, disability employment expert, will share insights on how companies are addressing new federal hiring guidelines, and how colleges and universities can prepare students to succeed.
Helm is the manager for diversity & inclusion at Discover Financial Services and previously worked for Career Opportunities for Students with Disabilities (COSD) at the University of Tennessee. She will provide an overview of the impact of Section 503 and new guidelines for higher education, including:
- Increased number of employers seeking candidates with disabilities
- Understanding of the mandate of reaching and maintaining compliance for employers
- The need for increased collaboration between disability services and career services
- The importance of allies and advocates
