Illinois Tech’s Engineers Without Borders (EWB) chapter was recently awarded a $5000 EWB-USA project grant, sponsored by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The grant is offered annually to only one EWB student team nationwide.
AIChE awards the grant to a deserving EWB student chapter that used chemical engineering principles to find solutions to issues such as water supply, sanitation, and energy. The group will use the funds to continue working with the residents of San Claudio, Nicaragua to address their basic human needs.
EWB-IIT is currently in the process of designing a composting latrine as a solution to the community’s needs for clean water. The grant will help the group begin implementing their designs during their service trip later this year.
