Keep Your Bicycle Safe on Campus—Use a U-Lock

Illinois Tech’s Mies (Main) Campus has experienced a recent uptick in bicycle thefts. The thefts have been a result of either the bicycle not being secured properly or using an inferior locking device.

All bicycle users should secure their bikes to the bicycle racks available throughout campus and utilize a U-lock. Proper usage of a U-lock will avoid frustration, inconvenience and replacement costs for students and faculty.

A properly installed U-lock secures both the frame and the front wheel to the rack. A common error is to place the U-lock only through the frame or only through the wheel when attaching to the rack. Examples of inferior locking devices which can easily be cut off include cable and chain locks.

If you have any questions about bicycle safety or the proper way to use a U-lock, contact the Department of Public Safety at publicsafety@iit.edu.
