Leon Lederman Lecture Series by Anna Grassellino on “The Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center at Fermilab”

flyerThe Department of Physics invites you to attend a lecture by Anna Grassellino, director of National SQMS Quantum Center, Fermilab, at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2025, in room 111 of the Pritzker Science Center. RSVP to John Zasadzinski at zasadzinski@illinoistech.edu.

Abstract

Quantum Information Science, including quantum computing, sensing, and networking is a rapidly expanding area of interest within the U.S. Department of Energy. In this talk, Grassellino will present a summary of the important achievements of the Fermilab National Quantum Institute (SQMS) during its first five years, as well as its future (SQMS 2.0).

Biography

Anna Grassellino is the Director of the National Quantum Information Science Center, a Fermilab Senior Scientist and the head of the Fermilab SQMS division. She is known internationally for her pioneering achievements in the field of radio frequency superconductivity such as the discovery of nitrogen doping and its implementation in large-scale accelerator projects. Grassellino is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the recipient of numerous awards for her pioneering contributions to SRF technology, including the 2023 New Horizon in Physics Breakthrough Prize, and is a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. She holds a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s of electronic engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy.
