Abdur R. Chowdhury (Ph.D. CS ’01), Andrew M. Hascall (ME ’92), Cheryl L. Hyman (CS ’96), and Bhakta B. Rath (Ph.D. MET ’63) are the 2015 recipients of the Professional Achievement Award.
Chowdhury has launched more than 20 commercial products, has 36 patents, and has authored more than 100 scientific publications and a book chapter. He co-founded the search engine Summize and became chief scientist of Twitter upon its purchase of Summize.
Hascall currently serves as installations and logistics director for Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona. In 2010, he led a $300 million-plus, 145-acre, twenty-first-century military installation in Italy that was delivered on time and under budget. The project won him international acclaim.
Hyman is chancellor of City Colleges of Chicago—a position appointed to her by Mayor Richard M. Daley and reappointed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. City Colleges is Illinois’ largest community college system, and she is responsible for ensuring the success of 115,000 students annually.
Rath has been head of the Materials Science and Component Technology Directorate, Naval Research Laboratory since 1986 and in this role supervises the work of nearly 800 scientists, covering the entire spectrum of materials science and engineering.
