Armour College of Engineering’s Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering will welcome Dr. Nikhil Gupta, a professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering, to present a lecture, “Enabling Future Manufacturing: Additive Manufacturing, Machine Learning, and Cybersecurity.”
The virtual seminar will take place on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, from 12:45–1:45 p.m. Contact Elena Magnus for the seminar details and a link to join.
Abstract
The scalable, reliable and resilient future manufacturing systems will be based on additive manufacturing (Am), sensors and machine learning. Many industrial parts have been redesigned using optimization and machine learning methods to save weight and improve functionality and are manufactured by the additive manufacturing methods. AM has enabled manufacturing of such designs. Ideally, the entire digital manufacturing system, from the product design to manufacturing and qualification phases, can be built on the same platform. However, implementation of such a vision requires many scientific and technological advancements. This talk will introduce the principles of composite material design for additive manufacturing and the use of machine learning methods for detection and quantification of defects. The characterization of soft materials is a challenging task, which are of interest for soft robotics and flexible electronics applications. The current test methods for soft materials mostly provide frequency domain properties, which have limited utility. The specific challenges in obtaining time domain elastic constants will be discussed. Finally, the machine learning methods used for materials design and characterization present a challenge that the same algorithms can be used to reverse engineer the part design and tool path. Novel cybersecurity methods need to become an integral part of the future manufacturing systems to protect from sabotage and intellectual property theft.
