The IIT Boeing Scholars Academy* is hiring six full-time Program Instructors for summer 2013 (weekdays June 10-August 1, 8am-4:30pm)! The Program Instructor position is especially well-suited for an advanced undergraduate or graduate student in a STEM-related field, with interest in urban education issues and working with high school students. Apply by February 18.
Each Program Instructor is responsible for leading a cluster of 15-17 high-achieving rising junior and senior high school students through a 4-week summer program, which provides participants with an interdisciplinary, thematic program of activities focused on increasing access and exposure to STEM fields and to higher education, solving real-world problems, and addressing “big ideas” of relevance to high school students in the Chicago area (see details about last summer’s programming). Beyond giving Program Instructors valuable project development and teaching experience, this position offers a unique opportunity to meet innovative leaders from diverse fields, industries, and organizations, as well as to collaborate with university faculty in a professional setting.
Compensation for this position is a $3400-4400 summer stipend, depending on background/experience, for approximately 290 hours. Pay for occasional meetings in April and May, 3 weeks of preparatory work in June, and 1 week of post-program work—all required—is already reflected in the stipend amount. *The Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Boeing Scholars Academy is a free, two-year academic enrichment program that inspires high-achieving Chicago-area high school students to make a difference in their communities through STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and to pursue higher education. Of this year’s 106 Scholars, 84% attend a Chicago Public School or affiliated charter, 68% are from an population underrepresented in STEM, 55% are female, and 45% are first-generation college. Scholars’ average unweighted GPA is 3.7 and their average ACT score is 27 (seniors only). Founded in 2011, our program is supported by a generous grant from the Boeing Company.
