The Illinois Tech Men’s Soccer team faced USCAA foe Andrews University on October 13. Illinois Tech dominated from start to finish, defeating the Cardinals 5-0. On October 15 the team snapped its seven-match winning streak, falling to Elmhurst College 2-1.
How it Happened – Andrews University
- It was a big day for the team’s seniors. One of them, Norikazu Honda, scored an unassisted goal in the 10th minute to get the scoring started for the Hawks.
- In the 18th minute, Quentin Dreilich, another senior, assisted Brandon Bortei-Doku to increase the lead to 2-0.
- Both Honda and Dreilich teamed up for the team’s third tally. Honda dished out an assist to his fellow senior in the 22nd minute as the lead continued to climb.
- The Scarlet Hawks were not done in the first half, as Michael Podsiadly scored courtesy of a Jacob Brown assist in the 38th minute.
- In the second half, Bortei-Doku scored his second goal of the match thanks to an assist from Jonathon Clarke.
Scarlet Hawk Standouts
- The senior tandem of Dreilich and Honda each tallied one goal and one assist. Dreilich also led the team with five shots and three shots on goal.
- Bortei-Doku scored twice on three shots (all on goal).
- Podsiadly scored his third goal of the season on four shots (three on goal).
- Both Clarke and Brown tallied assists.
- Alex Kern recorded a shutout, made three saves, and earned his eighth win of the season.
Stats to Know
- The Scarlet Hawks moved to 9-3-1 on the season.
- Illinois Tech outshot the Cardinals 26-6.
- A total of seven yellow cards were handed out (four for Andrews, three for Illinois Tech).
How it Happened – Elmhurst
- The Bluejays jumped ahead early. Zach Clements scored for the hosts on a rebound shot from JD Garnett in the sixth minute to take a 1-0 lead.
- In the 22nd minute, Clements struck again, scoring courtesy of teammates Oliver Salie and Garnett.
- The Scarlet Hawks got some offense going in the second half, scoring off of one of Illinois Tech’s three corner kicks. Honda gave a great pass to Peter Fouchet, who scored to cut the lead in half.
- Elmhurst used a 5-3 shot advantage in the second half to limit any further Scarlet Hawk chances.
Scarlet Hawk Standouts
- Fouchet scored on his only shot attempt.
- Honda had an assist and a shot.
- Oluwaseun Ogunsanya had a team-high two shots (one on net).
Stats to Know
- The Scarlet Hawks were outshot for the first time this season, trailing 13-7 in the category.
- Illinois Tech is now 9-4-1 on the season, while Elmhurst improved to 7-5-2.
- Each goalkeeper did not get much action. Elmhurst tallied three saves compared to one for the Scarlet Hawks.
