Illinois Tech’s Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions (CSEP) invites members of the Illinois Tech community to serve as judges or moderators at the Upper Midwest Regional Ethics Bowl Virtual Competition on Saturday, November 14, 2020. Teams from all over the Midwest will be competing, and the day promises to be full of lively discussion and debate.
During an ethics bowl, teams are presented with ethical dilemmas that they have had the opportunity to study and analyze and are asked questions about the cases. They are then judged on the quality of their analysis of each situation. The event is competitive but not adversarial—teams can agree but for different reasons. The format allows for teams to respond to each other and to respond to questions from the judges. The goal is to raise students’ ethical awareness and sensitivity, encourage collaborative thinking, and promote civil discourse.
The day will start at 8:30 a.m. and run until around 5 p.m. Volunteers are invited to participate in a series of morning or afternoon matches, or can stick around for the whole day. We will be providing orientation sessions a week before the event to help you get comfortable with the format of the event, as well as the virtual platform used to host the competition.
If you are interested in volunteering please fill out this form to get us your contact information and schedule preferences or you can email Kelly Laas, CSEP librarian.
Please feel free to share this information with anyone who might be interested in participating in this event. We hope to see you there!
