IIT College of Architecture grad student and Martin Roche Traveling Scholarship winner Anne Dudek has written an article on urbanization in China for the March/April 2013 issue of Chicago Architect.

In her article, “Two Chinese Architectures,” Dudek examines the precarious living arrangements of Chinese migrants caught between the burgeoning demand for mobile labor in the midst of China’s rapid development and the restrictions of a government housing policy that officially ties residents’ housing permits to their cities of origin.

As the recipient of the AIA Chicago Foundation’s Martin Roche Travel Scholarship, Anne Dudek received $5000 to study rapid urbanization in China and living conditions of migrant workers within cities. Available to students enrolled in an accredited school of architecture in Chicago, the Roche Scholarship allows awardees to complete an independent study related to the field of architecture and design.

Dudek is now a project manager at Nudell Architects, as well as a second year design studio teaching assistant at IIT.
