This past month as students on the Mies Campus wrapped up the semester, the trees and shrubs were just going into bloom. For those who may not have been able to enjoy the spring bloom, here is a visual recap of the flowers around the Arboretum along with some interesting information.

Cherry-flowering (Prunus serrulata) Located in front of the Vandercook School of Music.

Lilac (Syringa sp.) Located on the southeast corner of Perlstein Hall.

Crabapple (Malus sp.) Located west of the Rettaliata Engineering Building above the ventilation grates. The tree is in one of the locations on campus that exhibits a microclimate with the heat from the vents causing the tree to blossom earlier than most.

Rhododendron (Rhododendron sp.) Located on the right of the southeast entrance to Hermann Hall.

Redbud-eastern (Cercis canadensis) Located on the southwest corner of the Rettaliata Engineering Building.

Redbud-eastern (Cercis canadensis var. alba.) Located south of Herman Hall along 33rd Street. The tree is noticeably different from the other eastern redbuds on campus as the flowers have a distinct lack of red. The Alphawood Arboretum’s arborist noted the difference this spring as the tree was in bloom which brought another cultivar of the tree to our count. Only two such trees exist on the Mies Campus, so attempts will be made in the future to better preserve the cultivar via propagation.

Horse chestnut- common (Aesculus x carnea) Located on the southwest corner of Rowe South.

Dogwood-flowering (Cornus florida) Located on the southern end of Rowe South.

Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia “Purple robe”) Located to the right of the main western MTCC entrance.
