Maurice Adams, Professor of General Jurisdiction, Vfund Professor of Democratic Governance and Rule of Law and Vice Dean Education, at Tilburg Law School in the Netherlands will deliver the 2014 Henry C. Morris Lecture in International and Comparative Law at noon on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 in the Governor Richard B. Ogilvie Auditorium located at the Downtown Campus. Adams will address the topic “Regulating the End of Life.”

Euthanasia has been legalized in only three countries – the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Many countries that have criminalized euthanasia argue that a blanket ban is needed to protect the “weak and vulnerable.”

Adams will look at and discuss successful regulation of euthanasia and under which circumstances such controls could be exported to other countries. His scholarly interests include comparative legal research methodology, regulation, and the relationship between constitutional law and politics/political theory.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. The program is eligible for one hour of MCLE credit.

IIT Chicago-Kent’s Henry C. Morris Lecture in International and Comparative Law brings speakers from around the world to discuss current developments in international law.

The Morris Lecture was endowed by Henry Crittenden Morris (1863–1948), an 1889 graduate of the law school. A diplomat and international lawyer, Morris served as the United States Consul in Ghent, Belgium, and as secretary to Chief Justice Fuller at the Permanent International Court of The Hague. Morris’ diplomatic service overseas spanned the 25 years before the outbreak of the First World War. He was a member of the board of the Library of International Relations, the collection of international and comparative law materials which is now housed at IIT Chicago-Kent.
