A Chicago Tribune article about athletes’ attempts to swim across Lake Michigan from Chicago to Michigan City notes that “arguably the city’s most successful marathon swimmer,” Ted Erikson was a 33-year old research scientist at IIT when he succeeded and set a world open water distance record in 1961.
