Actuarial Science Club Welcome Tea and New Courses

The Actuarial Science Club will hold a welcome tea on Friday, September 14 in E1-102 from 1:30–2:30 pm. The club was established last year by several IIT students led by Hao Lu (M.A.S. MF ’12). The purpose is to help IIT students learn about the actuarial profession, prepare for actuarial exams, and gain actuarial internships and permanent positions. A local actuary advises the club and periodically meets with members.

Check out the club’s Facebook page to find out about recent activities. Contact Xiaodong Zhang (M.S. AMAT candidate), the club’s president, at xzhan118@hawk.iit.edu for more information.

Additionally, Lulu Kang, assistant professor of applied mathematics, has developed two new courses to benefit students pursuing careers as actuaries: MATH 484 “Regression and Forecasting” and MATH 564 “Applied Statistics.” Topics in these courses are relevant to the insurance and financial services professions as well as to engineering and physical sciences. These courses have recently been approved by the Society of Actuaries to satisfy the Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) requirement for Applied Statistical Methods. VEE is required to become an associate member in either the Casualty Actuarial Society or the Society of Actuaries.
