Alert from Chicago Police Department

As an ongoing example of the partnership between the Chicago Police Department and the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Department of Public Safety, the following Community Alert has been distributed by CPD. While these incidents occurred off campus, these are areas where our students, faculty, and staff may live or travel.

About the Crimes: 

This alert gives notice to citizens residing in the oo1st (Central) District of robbery-related incidents during the month of October. While male victims walked across a parking lot off-campus, they were approached by three teenage males. On two separate occasions the offenders stopped the victims and demanded their property. When the victims did not comply, they were struck in the face with fists and kicked or grabbed and restrained by the offenders. The offenders grabbed at the victims pockets, ripping cell phones and accessories from the victims. Offenders also forcibly removed backpacks from the victims shoulders and dumped the contents, looking for items of value. The offenders then fled on foot in various directions. These incidents have occurred during the evening hours in the general geographical locations listed below:

  • 3000 block of  South Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive on October 16 at 9 p.m.
  • 3000 block of  South Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive on October 18 at 6:45 p.m.
  • 300 block of East 61st Street on October 31 at 6 p.m.

About the Offenders:

  • Three offenders, male, African American, 14-18, 5’8, 120-160 lbs.
  • Three offenders, male, African American, 18-22, 5’6-6′, 155-175 lbs.
  • Two offenders, male, African American, 15-17, 5’8, 140-150 lbs.

What you can do: 

  • Anyone living in or visiting the Lake Meadows or Prairie Shores buildings should strongly consider using the CTA 31st Street bus or taking advantage of the Illinois Institute of Technology Public Safety escort vehicle that drops off passengers at the doors of these buildings. The CTA 31st Street bus info is at this link http://www.transitchicago.com/31pilot/
  • Use the Public Safety escort shuttle after 7 p.m.
  • Safety escorts within the Mies (Main) Campus are available anytime by calling the Public Safety escort line 312.808.6310.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings
  • Report suspicious activity immediately
  • If you are confronted by an assailant remain calm
  • Remember any unique physical characteristics (scar, limp, acne, teeth, etc . . . )
  • Never pursue a fleeing assailant, provide the information to the police
  • If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information
  • Dial 9-1-1 immediately and remain on scene when possible
