In fall 2013, IIT will launch a new professional master’s program in applied mathematics. This non-thesis master’s degree will provide applied and computational mathematics training in conjunction with teaching communication and teamwork skills demanded by today’s employers. The program offers students an exciting capstone experience solving serious, real-world problems in business and industry using modeling, statistical and data analysis, stochastic analysis and optimization techniques.
According to Forbes, a master’s degree in mathematics is one of the top 10 best master’s degrees in terms of providing graduates with long-term opportunities, competitive salaries and a promising employment outlook. The Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics says, “The very idea of a career in mathematics has evolved and diversified,” creating a rapidly expanding market for interdisciplinary mathematics programs that prepare graduates for a broad range of job opportunities. The new master’s degree in applied mathematics aims to do just this.
