Applied Mathematics Students Will Do Research Internships at Argonne, Participate in Big Data Institute at University of Michigan

Two students from the Department of Applied Mathematics will do internships with the Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) division at Argonne National Laboratory this summer. A third student will participate in the University of Michigan’s Big Data Summer Institute.

Argonne’s MCS selected Xiao Huang, Ph.D. candidate in applied mathematics, as a Givens Associate, which is a summer internship for graduate students who are beginning careers in numerical analysis or computational mathematics.

Huang will conduct research on statistics and optimization with the MCS’ Jeffery Larson, Ph.D., assistant computational mathematician in the applied mathematics group. A Ph.D. student at Illinois Tech since 2015, Huang works with Lulu Kang, associate professor of applied mathematics, on various research projects in statistical experimental design and modeling.

MCS selected undergraduate Saikiran Yerraguntla (CS/AMAT 2nd year) to do an internship from Tuesday, May 30 to Friday, August 4 under the DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program. Yerranguntla will work on Waggle, a project to design, develop, and deploy a novel wireless sensor system to enable a new breed of smart city research and sensor-driven environmental science.

Undergraduate Marissa Ashner (AMAT 4th year) will participate in the Big Data Summer Institute, which is funded in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), at University of Michigan Monday, June 5 to Friday, July 14. She will learn about data analytics techniques in the context of public health and biostatistics, which is the field she hopes to make a career out of. A small group research project also is included in the program.
