Bora Jang (CE Ph.D. student) was named the recipient of the John Fisher Student award for best student paper at the Ninth New York City Bridge Conference held August 21–23. She was honored for her paper “Bridge Rating Modification to Incorporate Potential Fatigue Damage from Truck Overloads.”

In this research, Jang uses the potential for fatigue damage from truck overloads to modify a bridge’s bridge rating. Her model is expected to have a direct application in limiting the number of truck overload permits thus prolonging the life expectancy of bridges.

Jang is completing her Ph.D. at Illinois Tech under the supervision of Jamshid Mohammadi, professor of civil and architectural engineering and associate dean of the Graduate College for Academic Affairs.
