Kathleen Mullin (MSE 3rd year) was recently named the recipient of a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF). The highly competitive program only awards around 100 fellowships each year to undergraduate students in the United States. The program is co-sponsored by NIST and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Mullin will receive a $5,500 stipend and will have her housing and travel expenses covered by the NIST for the duration of the program for a total award of $9,565. For eleven weeks, she will contribute to research projects at the NIST Material Measurement Laboratory in Gaithersburg, MD under the guidance of NIST researchers, including three Nobel Laureates.
