BCBS Health Plan Members Be Aware of Increased Fraud Attempts

Blue Cross Blue Shield has made us aware of an increase in fraud attempts via email, text, and phone calls. This is impacting individuals as “spoofing” attempts, as well as in the filing of fraudulent claims. Spoofing attempts are incidents in which someone impersonates a legitimate corporation in an attempt to gain access to personal information, such as bank account or credit card information. Health plan members are encouraged to remain vigilant to ensure that they do not provide scammers with personal information, and take necessary action should fraudulent claims be filed under their name.

Actions you can take:

  • If someone contacts you claiming to be an BCBS agent and asking for banking or payment information: DO NOT give out any information. As a reminder, members should pay providers for any services rendered once a claim has been processed. Additionally, BCBS will never contact members asking for banking or payment information.
  • If you receive notification of a claim having been finalized or receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statement for a service you or your dependent(s) did not receive: contact BCBS using the number for a Health Advocate line on the back of your BCBS ID card. The number is also available on the Health page of Human Resources’ website.
  • Sign up for electronic EOBs and claim finalization notifications so you can be sure you’re made aware of these transactions as soon as possible. To do so, log into your member account at www.bcbsil.com, go to your profile, and the Notification Preferences.

If you have any questions about the Illinois Tech BCBS health plan for benefits eligible faculty and staff, please reach out to Human Resources.
