2012 CSL Undergraduate Summer Research Stipend Program Nomination Deadline Approaching

IIT College of Science and Letters Associate Dean for Academics Matt Bauer announced that the college is accepting nominations for $5,000 CSL Undergraduate Summer Research Stipends. Up to eight stipends will be awarded. All CSL majors are eligible, and all IIT faculty may nominate a student.  Nominations are due by Friday, March 9.

The CSL Undergraduate Summer Research Stipends, funded primarily by the college’s board and alumni and now in their sixth year, pay students for ten weeks of research with IIT faculty in the summer. They help students expand their hands-on research experience, explore their interests, solve problems, advance knowledge, and prepare for the next step — whether graduate school, medical school, or the workplace.

“Some of the research stipend recipients in the past were able to continue their work with their faculty mentor after the summer and present at a conference or submit to a journal for publication,” said Bauer. “This experience is invaluable to undergraduates who have thoughts about continuing their education after receiving their B.S.”

To be eligible, students should be full-time undergraduates, usually a sophomore or junior, in good standing, with a grade point average of 3.0 or above. They also should not be a recipient of another, similar stipend.

Past winners have done work in humanities, political science, computer science, applied mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics. Read about the work of last year’s winners here.

CSL will announce the awards in April. If you have any questions, please contact Bauer at bauerm@iit.edu.
