Campus Closures and Restrictions for NATO Summit

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will hold its 25th summit in Chicago on May 20-21, 2012. Leaders from NATO member countries are scheduled to attend the two-day event being held at McCormick Place and other locations in the city.  In addition to the many travel and security restrictions put in place by city, state, and federal authorities, the Main and Downtown Campuses of Illinois Institute of Technology plan building closures and access restrictions from Thursday, May 17 through Tuesday morning, May 22.

All IIT students, faculty, and staff must carry IIT identification with them to gain access to buildings on campus from Thursday, May 17 through Tuesday morning, May 22.

Main Campus
Hermann Hall and the MTCC will be closed on Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20. Identification will be required to enter Hermann Hall or the MTCC on Monday, May 21, and the south entrances of the MTCC will be locked (east and west entrances will be open).  Identification may be requested by Public Safety on Thursday and Friday, May 17 and 18.  Guests and vendors must be accompanied by an IIT ID carrying member of the community or they will be denied entrance.

Friday, May 18 — 7 am – 7 pm
Saturday, May 19 — Closed

Downtown Campus
The Downtown Campus building at 565 W. Adams will be closed on Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20.  Due to the Downtown Campus’s proximity to the loop and downtown hotels where many delegates will be staying, increased security and restricted access to certain streets and pathways is expected before, after, and during the summit.

Additional security will be present at the Downtown Campus from Thursday, May 17, through Tuesday morning, May 22.  All students, faculty, and staff should have your IIT identification with you at all times in the event that access to the area is restricted (please see the DTC Registrar if you currently do not have an IIT ID Card).
