Celebrate IIT Engineering Themes Month

Get involved in more than 20 tours, panels, expos and events during the month of September. RSVP for these events here.

Remember, the IIT Engineering Themes is launching its undergraduate engineering portfolio application this fall. As you take part in themes events, our online engineering portfolio will track your progress and create an entry for each item.

To take part, swipe your IIT Hawk ID Card at Armour College sponsored themes events (such as the ones listed below). Every undergraduate engineering student is automatically approved to begin an engineering portfolio and will have online access to their entries via the IIT Engineering website.

Water Week: September 3-8

Beach Clean-Up – Tuesday, September 4 – 11:30am-2:30pm – 31st Street Beach
Join the IIT Community in volunteering to clean our neighborhood 31st Street Beach in Chicago. Enjoy a complimentary lunch, help test the beach’s water quality, collect data, and learn about this valuable, local ecosystem. A shuttle bus will transport students to the beach. The shuttle bus will leave from the corner of 33rd Street and Federal Street (on the IIT campus) at 11:30am and 12:50pm. Return trips from the beach to campus will be at 12:40pm and 2:15pm. Students are welcome to stay the entire time or return to campus on the 12:40pm shuttle. RSVP here by Monday, September 3, to attend.

Water Research Expo – Tuesday, September 4 – 12pm-2pm – MTCC Welcome Center
Come see Armour College faculty members showcase their cutting-edge research. This expo will center on engineering and its relation to our most valuable natural resource: water.

Enjoy a complimentary lunch while interacting with a panel of prominent experts as they discuss the challenges of urban water management. RSVP now

Alumni Career Panel – Thursday, September 6 – 5pm-6:30pm – MTCC Ballroom

TARP Tour – Friday, September 7 – 8:30am-11:30am & 12:30pm-3:30pm – Mainstream Pumping Station in Hodgkins, Illinois
Take a field trip to the Mainstream Pumping Station in Hodgkins, Illinois. You will enjoy a guided tour where you will descend 350 feet below ground to explore how Chicago manages its massive storm water and waste water systems. The Mainstream Pumping Station is one of three stations in the Tunnel and Reservoir Project (TARP). It is designed to capture combined sewer overflows from an area of 375 square miles in the Chicagoland area. Students can attend one of two tours.

Tour 1: A shuttle bus will leave from the corner of 33rd Street and Federal Street (on the IIT campus) promptly at 8:30am. Students will return to campus at 11:30am.

Tour 2: A shuttle bus will leave from the corner of 33rd Street and Federal Street (on the IIT campus) promptly at 12:30pm. Students will return to campus at 3:30pm.

Please note that there is limited availability for this trip. IIT undergraduate engineering students will be given priority for this water week event.

In addition, you must fill out and submit a waiver form by Tuesday, September 4, at 12 pm. There are two ways to fill out a form:

  • Fill out the waiver form at Suite 224 in Perlstein Hall.
  • Fill out the waiver form at a Themes Month promo booth located outside IIT’s MTCC Campus Book Store from 11am-2:30pm between Monday, August 27, and Friday, August 31.

A state-issued ID or passport is required to submit your form.

Visitors must wear long pants and close-toed shoes on the day of the tour. (No dresses, shorts, sandals or high heels are allowed.)

A reception and Q&A session will follow the formal tour. Please note: You will need your IIT ID to gain access to the IIT Tower. RSVP now

Health Week: September 17-22

Health Research Expo and Athletic Day – Tuesday, September 18 – 10am-4pm – Keating Sports Center
Come take part in the Health Research Expo and Athletic Day in the Keating Sports Center. Attendees will participate in a series of exercise sessions with the objective of burning as many calories as possible. During a break in the action, check out the health engineering research expo featuring the work of IIT’s acclaimed faculty. Please wear athletic shoes and shorts to take part in the exercise sessions. You will also need your IIT ID to gain access to the Keating Sports Center. RSVP now

Field Trip: International Museum of Surgical Science – Friday, Sept. 21 – 10:30am-1:30pm – International Museum of Surgical Science
Take a trip to the International Museum of Surgical Science. Attendees will tour the facility and enjoy a simulated amputation demo and presentation on surgical instruments. A shuttle bus will transport students to the museum. The shuttle bus will leave from the corner of 33rd Street and Federal Street (on the IIT campus) at 10:30am. Students will return to campus at 1:30pm.
