CUW Downs Baseball in Doubleheader

The Illinois Tech Baseball team played two games during the second day of its Arizona trip on March 12. The Scarlet Hawks lost both ends of an evening doubleheader against Concordia University Wisconsin, falling 17-7 and 8-1.

How it Happened –Game One

  • The Falcons started fast, scoring six times in the first inning. Illinois Tech responded with four runs in the top of the third, using three walks and three hits. Christian Lopez and Kyle Bumpass each drove in runs on singles, and Jonathan Wilcox and Zachary Dickey each had bases-loaded walks. 
  • CUW scored three more times over the next two innings to go up 9-4. A Dickey sacrifice fly after a Tyler Tucker double and Wilcox single in the top of the fifth drove in a run for the Scarlet Hawks.
  • The Falcons scored three times in the fifth and five times in the sixth to take a 12-run advantage. In the top of the seventh, Dickey hit Illinois Tech’s first home run of the season (solo) before Tucker was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded later in the inning.

How it Happened – Game Two

  • Concordia-Wisconsin jumped out ahead once again, taking an 8-0 advantage through the contest’s first five innings.
  • Illinois Tech’s lone run in the game came in the bottom of the fifth. A Matt Witkowski groundout drove Kyle Bumpass in.
  • The Falcons were kept at bay the rest of the day thanks to a strong Scarlet Hawk bullpen. Ryan Cantlin, who started game one, returned for game two to throw 2.2 innings of three-hit, one-run ball out of the bullpen. Dylan Corsi worked a scoreless top of the seventh inning.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Dickey had a monster game one, going two-for-two with the home run and three RBI. He also walked and scored a run.
  • DJ Rybski and Carsten Wahl were the only two Scarlet Hawks to hit safely in both contests. Each had two hits on the day.

  • The Scarlet Hawks continue the trip in Tucson, Arizona, with a single-game on Monday, March 13 against Augsburg. Illinois Tech downed the Minnesota school 6-5 on March 11 in the first game of the trip. The contest is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. CT at Kino Sports Complex Field #5.
