Marcelo Ferraz, co-founder of Brasil Arquitetura, will deliver a lecture as part of the Dean’s Lecture Series on Friday, March 27 at 6:30 p.m. in S. R. Crown Hall.
Ferraz is a professor of the Escola da Cidade project in São Paulo. Ferraz graduated from FAU-USP and joined the Faculty of Sao Paulo in 1974 when he began his internship with the architect Lina Bo Bardi in 1977.
Two works by Marcelo Ferraz and Brasil Arquitetura were nominated for the inaugural Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize: Praca das Artes in Sao Paulo and The Bread Museum in Ilopolis.
LTDA Brasil Arquitetura was founded in 1979 by Francisco De Paiva Fanucci, Marcelo Suzuk and Marcelo Ferraz. The firm has since developed projects for diverse programs such as: museums, residential buildings, private houses, boutiques, restaurants, and community and cultural centers. In 1986, the marcenaria baraúna, a joinery workshop, was set up for attending the in-house construction of wooden crafts and furniture designed by the architects.
Their designs adopt asymmetry, geometric shapes and meld past and contemporary styles. All work is inspired by a sense lightness, most often using clear glass and colors.
Ferraz has been the recipient of numerous awards for his work as an architect and has also received several awards for publishing books on Rural Architecture in the Mountains, Lina Bo Bardi projects, as well as documentaries.
