Department of Social Sciences High School Outreach Day

On November 27, 150 Advanced Placement students from suburban high schools visited campus as part of a high school outreach program designed by the Department of Social Sciences in collaboration with the European Union Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Students took tours of IIT and attended three separate events on campus.

Assistant Professor Laura Hosman started off by presenting her work on technology and development, and explaining how IIT students have been involved in implementing solar- powered Internet and education projects in Haiti and Micronesia. Guests were then joined by IIT students, faculty and staff for a lecture on the European Union by Mark Pituch, academic program director for the European Union delegation to the United States. Pituch discussed the history of the European Union and challenges for its future, followed by a lively, well-informed question and answer session about the Euro crisis. The day wrapped up with short talk on tips for students interested in international careers by Matt Rosenstein, associate director of the EU Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
