Honda’s Two Goals Lead Illinois Tech Past Carroll, Defiance Forces a 2-2 Draw

The Illinois Tech Men’s Soccer team hosted its fourth straight home contest on September 10, taking on the Pioneers of Carroll University (Wisconsin). Illinois Tech recorded its second consecutive shutout en route to a 3-0 victory. The team also played a mid-afternoon match on September 13 at Defiance College. Defiance used a strong performance in net to force a 2-2 draw.

How it Happened – Carroll 

  • Illinois Tech dominated possession early on, holding a 9-2 shot advantage for the first half. The efficiency paid off in the 28th minute when Norikazu Honda took a Brandon Bortei-Doku pass and fired it past the goalkeeper for the first tally of the match. It was Honda’s first goal of 2017.
  • Defensively, Illinois Tech remained tight in the second half, allowing only three shot attempts for the Pioneers.
  • Illinois Tech attempted just five shots in the second half, but made the most of them. One of the five shots was a goal off the foot of Christopher Reed in the 62nd minute. Like Honda, it was his first 2017 goal.
  • With just five seconds remaining, the Scarlet Hawks capped off the win with another Bortei-Doku to Honda connection.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Honda’s quickness was too much for the Pioneers. He scored twice on a team-high four shot attempts (three on net).
  • Bortei-Doku managed to assist on both of Honda’s goals.
  • Reed scored on his only shot attempt.
  • Alex Kern earned his second win of the season and second straight shutout, making four saves.

Stats to Know

  • Illinois Tech outshot Carroll 14-5.
  • Fouls and yellow cards were aplenty on the evening. Carroll committed 20 fouls compared to Illinois Tech’s 15. Each team was carded twice.
  • Carroll was shutout despite attempting eight corners. The Scarlet Hawks attempted two.

 The Illinois Tech men’s soccer team played a mid-afternoon match on Wednesday at Defiance College. Defiance used a strong performance in net to force a 2-2 draw.

How it Happened – Defiance

  • The Scarlet Hawks dominated possession early, which reflected on the scoreboard eight minutes into the match. Oluwaseun Ogunsanya scored on a Honda assist.
  • The Yellow Jackets evened up the score in the 21st minute on an unassisted goal.
  • While the Scarlet Hawks won the shot count 5-3 in the first half and 10-4 in the second half, Defiance managed to keep the score tied at 1-1.
  • First year Noah Kwortnik broke through for Illinois Tech in the 72nd minute, scoring from Honda on a corner kick to go up 2-1.
  • In the 86th minute, Defiance tied the match to force overtime.
  • Overtime was dominated by the Scarlet Hawks on possession, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 5-1 in the two ten minute halves. However, Defiance turned the Hawks away to force the 2-2 outcome.

  • Honda led the Scarlet Hawks with seven shots and five shots to go along with his two assists.
  • Kwortnik scored on one of his two shot attempts.
  • Ogunsanya had a goal and two shots (one on goal).

  • The final shot count was 20-8 in favor of Illinois Tech.
  • Defiance made 10 total saves.
  • Illinois Tech had 10 corner kicks compared to three for the Yellow Jackets.
