IIT College of Architecture Distinguished Research Professor Walter Sobel Has Passed Away

It is with great sadness that IIT announces the passing of IIT College of Architecture Distinguished Research Professor Walter Sobel, FAIA.

Sobel had a long history with the university dating back to 1935 when he graduated from the Armour Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science degree in Architecture.

A World War II veteran, Sobel taught classes at the College of Architecture and founded Walter H. Sobel, FAIA & Associates. His expertise included providing consulting for courthouses, administrative facilities and law schools, as well as libraries and moot/practice courts. Sobel also served as a past president of the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

As a loyal graduate, Sobel received the highest honor given to a living alumnus – the Alumni Medal – in 1999. Last year, the Wilmette Life wrote a feature article on his numerous accomplishments and becoming a centenarian.

A Memorial Service is planned for Friday, June 13, 2014 at 1:30 pm at Beth Emet Synagogue located at 1224 Dempster in Evanston. Burial will take place at Rosehill Cemetery located at 5800 North Ravenswood in Chicago immediately following the memorial service. Shiva (condolence visits) will take place at Sobel’s home located at 507 Lake Avenue in Wilmette on Friday afternoon following the return from the cemetery and on Sunday, June 15 through Wednesday, June 18 from 7:30-9 pm.
