Illinois Tech alumnus Mathai Varghese (MATH ’81) was recently awarded a 2017 Australian Laureate Fellowship. Varghese is the director of the Institute for Geometry and Its Applications and the elder professor of mathematics at the University of Adelaide, Australia. The goal of his project, Advances in Index Theory and Applications, is to develop novel techniques to investigate geometric analysis on infinite dimensional bundles and pathological spaces. Varghese is also a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and of the Australian Mathematical Society, and he was awarded the Australian Mathematical Society Medal in 2000.
