Men’s Soccer Open Season with Loss at Marian

The Illinois Tech Men’s Soccer team opened the season on the road on September 1, taking on the Sabres of Marian University in Wisconsin. Marian defeated the Scarlet Hawks 2-1.

How it Happened

  • It did not take long for the Scarlet Hawks to get on the board, as Illinois Tech scored just before the 15 minute mark to go ahead 1-0. Quentin Dreilich scored the first tally of the season on a penalty kick. 
  • After the Scarlet Hawks goal, Marian began to pepper goalkeeper Anastasios Manolis with shots. With just 18 seconds left in the first half, Marian was able to break through, tying the score on an Alonso Fragoso goal off of a Muhammed Abshir cross.
  • In half number two, the Sabres struck first. Jose Luis Alvarado scored at the 51 minute mark to give Marian the 2-1 advantage.
  • Noah Griffith and Oluwaseun Ogunsanya each fired shots on goal down the stretch, but Marian keeper Ian Chacon stood strong. A Norikazu Honda shot was blocked at the 86 minute mark, which was Illinois Tech’s last shot attempt of the match.
