Passing of Nasir Mirza

Dear Illinois Tech Students, Faculty, and Staff,

It is with great sadness that we announce the recent passing of longtime staff member Nasir Mirza. Nasir had long served as Paul V. Galvin Library’s reserves specialist, first coming to Illinois Tech nearly 30 years ago. Nasir was part of an early electronic reserves initiative that was one of the first of its kind in the nation, and oversaw the Group Study Suites and the Exploration Space in more recent years as well.

Nasir touched many lives at Illinois Tech, from the faculty and staff with whom he collaborated, to the students he supervised and served. In 2017 he was recognized for his excellent work as a student supervisor, receiving the Illinois Tech Distinguished Student Supervisor Award. In 2018 his deep interest in serving and contributing to the Illinois Tech community was evidenced by his service on the Service Design team, which won that year’s award for Innovative Solutions to Improve the Efficiency of Illinois Tech Operations. Outside of Illinois Tech, Nasir was an active participant and contributor in library workers’ communities as well.

Everyone he worked with appreciated his good humor and willingness to help, and he will be dearly missed. Nasir’s family echoed his commitment to Illinois Tech, stating, “Nasir spent so much of his life at IIT and was so proud of it.” Our deepest sympathies go out to Nasir’s family and friends during this difficult time.
